a)Right or wrong ? Justify briefly :

The Statue of Liberty :

1. The ferry to the Statue leaves once every hour.W- every 25 mn

2. You can’t enter the museum without a reservation.R- you must reserve a time slot in advance

3. Once inside the Statue, you may go up to the top.W- you’re no longer allowed in the crown/torch

4. The Immigration museum is not said to be interesting.W- it’s worth a visit

5. The admission to that museum is expensive.W- it’s free

6. Both islands are opened longer in the summer.R- there are extended opening hours in the summer

The Brooklyn Bridge :

7. Walking down the bridge is only allowed one way.W_ it’s allowed in either direction

9. Even pedestrians must pay to cross the bridge.W- ‘for no toll’

b)Answer the following questions (make sentences) :

1.Can you relax close to water in Central park ? Yes, there are lakes.

2. Why isn’t it very dark at night on Times Square ?There are video screens and LED signs.

3.What is the Lincoln Center ? It’s a huge/enormous cultural complex.

4. Can you go to the cinema within Lincoln Center ?Yes, there are several movie theatres.

5. Can you ice-skate on Rockefeller Plaza in July ?No’ the skating rink is not opened year round.

6.Why is it advised to visit the Empire State Building at night ? Because lines are 1 to 4 hours during the day but much shorter at night.

 

 

B/ google ‘new-york city wikipedia’ , scroll down to ‘Culture and Contemporary life’  and read :

1.Click on jazz ‘(read a few lines) What is the origin of jazz ?It’s African-American.

 

2. Click on ’Abstract Expressionism’ (read the first two lines) ; When did this movement appear and why was it important for the USA and New-York ? It appeared after World War Two. It was the first worldwide art movement that began in NYC.

 

3. What other musical style began in New-York City ? When ?Hip-hop, in the 70s.

 

 

C/ google ‘nycvisit’ and, on the homepage, go down to nyc essentials, click on ‘things to…. Then click on ‘find out what type of New-Yorker you are’, do the test. What is your profile ?______________________
